See you in Portland!

Over the next few days, I will be attending the LavaCon Conference on Digital Media and Content Strategies in Portland, Oregon. Also, I will be presenting a lightning talk during the event. I look forward to meeting my colleagues and forging new connections. This will mark the second time attending LavaCon.

LavaCon Conference Session

My lightning talk will be about avoiding social media and electronic meltdowns. Lightning talks usually consist of five to ten minutes of fame…or flame in which presenters present as much information on an edgy or trendy topic, coupled with the pressure of automatic advancing slides. I look forward to presenting alongside well-known technical communication colleagues.

The best way to find me during the conference will be via Twitter (@RogerRenteria) or text message.

Be sure to follow the Twitter tag #LavaCon as well as read coverage on TechWhirl.com.

I will have more info on my presentation and conference details over the weekend.

Is Distance Learning Worth It? New TechWhirl Article

Do you think that one day you may end up taking an online distance learning course instead of attending traditional classroom?

Is Distance Learning Worth It?

Distance learning allows you a lot of flexibility, but is it worth the time and effort?

The wonderful folks at TechWhirl published my article which I ask and answer the question: Is Distance Learning Worth It? My article delves into some history regarding distance learning in technical communication and includes insight from colleagues who have had varying experience with this method of instruction to advance their careers.

I also found a nugget of information from STC Conference Proceedings published in 1996 which defined an early version of distance learning nearly 15 years ago and how (at that time) was only the beginning.

New Article: Technical Communication Insight from Neil Perlin

Hi everyone, I want to let you know that the awesome folks over at TechWhirl have graciously published my interview with Neil Perlin from LavaCon 2011.

In this interview, I spoke with Neil who has been in the field of technical communication for more than 33 years. While my intent was to cover content strategy with him, we talked a little bit about why technical communication is fun too! Please stop by TechWhirl and read the latest article: “The More Things Change…Technical Communication Insight from Neil Perlin.”

Author’s note: I use the term “technical communication” everywhere, however the style guide for TechWhirl utilizes “technical communications” instead.
